After rewatching it, I figure the spell was intended to help a pony fulfill her/his Marked destiny. It seems the ponies that the buggy version was used on were more driven than usual to fulfill "their" cutie mark talents.

I get the feeling that Starswirl never finished the spell not because he wasn't able to, but because he just didn't care enough to.
Probably was his first notebook and he then moved onto the things that made sure he got a library wing named after him.

I liked the episode, which was a surprise since I don't like the idea of Twilight as an alicorn. The reasoning was incredibly flawed. Your friends, which understood the meaning of friendship, taught you about friendship; therefore, you should be an alicorn princess but not them.

I think we all knew the reasoning was flawed from the start to give her wings, since the show from the start was only supposed to have two alicorns.

I think the idea was that she mastered all the elements in one pony, whereas each of the others was not able to. Still, the pacing was so horrid, who knows! Maybe this is just Third Impact.

She still seems like an awkward dork to me, which hardly makes her a friendship master. Pinkie Pie retains that title. She was willing to never quit on Gilda or Cranky, which was apparently overlooked to allow Discord's return to focus on Fluttershy.
