So okay, what was the purpose of Starswirl the Bearded's unfinished spell?
If the unfinished one switched all the cutie marks, what does the complete one do now? It's pretty much a spell to use if you don't want to switch cutie marks all up, right? whu-huh?

CONSIDER this...

He must have tried his own spell... It activated the Elements of Harmony, and switched the c-marks of those who yielded them a thousand years ago, right?
And he NEVER FIGURED IT OUT.
Hmmmmmm...

I still want to see (and hear) that frazzled old wizard actually appear in the show.

Best I can figure, the spell is supposed to harness the Elements of Harmony to give the caster "magic without end" -- or as it's known in other circles, "POWER! Unlimited POWER!" Twilight wasn't turned into an alicorn as a reward for completing the spell, but as a result of using it.

Oh, and to expand on your crazy idea: Star Swirl's failure to correct his destiny switcheroo sent Equestria down the wrong path, to an altered timeline that Should Not Be. That's why things like Sombra, Discord, and Nightmare Moon keep happening. It's also why the Doctor has taken such a keen interest in the ponies' world.

Okay, so SS the B intended to write a spell to grant the caster the gift that Twilight got, but he got it wrong because friendship, etc. ok, I can see that.
It still makes sense that he must have tried it with the demonstrated outcome.

Sure. Unless the spell is strong enough that even the incomplete form can only be used by an alicorn or somepony with a connection to the Elements of Harmony. In which case it may have just fizzled when he tried it.

So Luna was in charge of the sun and Celestia was in charge of the Moon?

Considering he made hundreds of spells, and was a powerful and wise unicorn, it makes one wonder...

It sounds like a destiny-revealing or destiny-fulfillment spell to me, and it looks like it worked on Twilight, in spades. He might have become Discord, or Sombra the Sideburned, or he might just have given up; the whole thing reminded me of Fermat's Last Theorem.

I wonder if Luna and Starswirl were an item? She kept his journal, and she noted Twilight's costume.

1000 years ago they weren't divided I think though, iirc Luna and Celestia were the only ones wielding them.

I just figured it was some spell that Starswirl wanted to use to turn himself into an alicorn.
